Today is a wonderful day.... shafts of sunlight through the tall pines across the street and Rumi is chomping at the bit to go over and chase around in pretense of catching a squirrel... a charade that he performs for me. I just purchased a wonderful new account of Fairhope, written by Alison Knight, my neighbor a few doors down. The name of the book is Salubrious Climate: Five Generations... It is the story of her family history, especially the first member to come here and one of two men, I believe we must give credit to for finding FH for the single taxers who lived in Des Moines, Iowa. His name is so interesting in itself. Shuah Strait Mann, Pioneer to FH, arrived on these shores on August 15, 1894 with another single taxer, James Belangee... Here is part of what they wrote for an already established paper, The Fairhope Courier (another story about the already established paper) We next visited Baldwin County, Alabama which lies just across Mobile Bay from Mobile. Your committee would say that for beauty of aspect and attractiveness of surroundings, this location surpasses any they saw in their travels. It has all the advantages of situation on the coast and in addition it is the highest point on the coast from New Orleans to New Jersey. It varies in height from 30 to 90 feet and is covered with timber of pine, live oak, sweet gum, holly, cedar, etc. though most of the timber is hard pine. Clear springs of the best water afford opportunities for waterpower. ...Of the healthfulness of the situation there can be no doubt as it has all the advantages of the Gulf Breeze, its purity and the high altitude and perfect drainage and the health giving aroma of the pine trees. I highly recommend this lovely new account by Alison knight about the history of Fairhope and the Single Tax Colony. The letters of her Great-Great Grandfather and her Great Grandfather are remarkable... they are pure poetry and very dramatic and beautifully written. Sonya
