Today is a wonderful day to stop and count your blessings. There is so much for which we should be thankful but sadly we oftentimes spend so much time sulking about what we do not have or could have been and forget to count the many things we do have. Think about the many individuals who are so ill and their bodies racked with pain yet they would spend any amount of money just to regain their health. Yet you and I have not visited a doctor in such a long time and still we are not grateful for the blessing of life and health. Think about the many individuals who are going to be hungry every night and some even end up dead as a result of starvation. We may never be able to fully comprehend the physical trauma that such an individual experiences for our hunger is so short-lived because we have access to so much to eat and drink even when our stomachs are still filled even when our minds remain hungry. Yet there are so many who complain about eating the same thing more than once a week forgetting that those who would have died would have been happy to have just a fraction of what they have available to them every day of the year. Think about the many children and parents who cannot account for each other either as a result of perpetual wars or social unrest. There are many families who are just left with memories; oftentimes these memories act as ghosts to haunt their waking moments for what is left indelibly etched in their minds are the hopelessness in the voice of their loved ones as they were dragged from their presence. Yet God has preserved our families through all the storms of life but we take them for granted and it is at death we are forced to reflect on how special they were to us; but alas it will be too late. There are so many intelligent and once well-rounded individuals who have veered from the path of being lucid and have now been diagnosed as being mentally challenged. They still look well but have lost all sense of reality. All that is left is what appears to be the empty shell and eyes that appear to be as lost as they wander through life. Yet God has preserved us in our right frame of mind in spite of the many pressures we have had to endure and it has nothing to do with our coping skills but all about His grace which is undeserving. Think about the thousands of individuals who do not know how they will pay that next rent, mortgage, school fee or outstanding bill because they invested in something that was needed not just wanted. Yet we could be comforted in knowing where our next pay check will come from or retirement monies will be deposited into our account. Yet we complain about how small the amount of money is forgetting that these thousands have no idea when they will even get to the point of having a regular source of income. Consider for a moment Paul’s counsel in Philippians 4:10-13 “10But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned before, but you lacked opportunity. 11Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. 12I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. 13I can do all things through Him who strengthens me”. May God help us to live in an attitude of gratitude!!!
