Today is about the individuals who lost so much so quickly. Today is dedicated to the innocent people who suffered for no good reason, as if any reason could ever be good to justify the destruction of human life. It is unfathomable that even now we live in a world where people kill, where chosen wars wreck lands, where people are starved. Were bound to a society that is not even slightly fair. Killing someone, taking someones life away from them and their loved ones, making someone hurt, taking away their right to live is inhumane. The tragic loss of life due to the attacks on 9/11 and the subsequent innocent casualties of war did not shock me because of the scale or complexity of the whole thing, it shocked me because at that age, I was naive enough to believe people were above mindless hatred and slaughter. And even after such a heinous event in human history, it seems we have not progressed at all. I pray for the innocent human beings that fell victim to a cause they had nothing to do with. I pray that humans of all heritages, all nations, all faiths restrain themselves from extremism and senseless violence. I pray that one day our leaders choose wars just as wisely as they choose words to define them. Progress is only possible when we as humans are not as prone to sacrifice moral and ethical means in order to satisfy selfish and political ends. Progress is inevitable when we recognize the sanctity of human life.
