Today is my son, Harrys 21st birthday. While I am a bit shell - TopicsExpress

Today is my son, Harrys 21st birthday. While I am a bit shell shocked at the speedy transit of the years, I am somewhat relieved that has got this far relatively unscathed! On pondering this childs particular strengths and weaknesses, one of the things I have repeatedly observed about him - over the years - is that he is preternaturally happy. I mean, whatever this child has, it should be bottled. Rain, hail or shine, he seems to bounce back from illness and adversity. Infact, his brother has this proclivity as well. So I suppose I am now wondering if the ability to be happy regardless of ones circumstances and challenges may be genetic. In the case of my children, they may have inherited this from my side or their fathers because people happy with their lot - no matter what - seem to be on both sides. Just a few days ago, I finished a wonderful book by David Finkel called: Thank You For Your Service. In it, Finkel makes one observation that I have noted. Healing he says, Is an act of persuasion. Perhaps my family, generally, are among those who persuasively self heal . Perhaps we are natural at the mental gymnastics required to turn around something bad into something good, through the alchemy of self prophecy? Whatever it is, I am grateful that my children have it. Forget good grades, handsome looks, athletic ability or all those other things we look for in each other. You cant really beat the ability to be happy no matter what! Im now off to celebrate my sons milestone. At the very least, you can be assured it will be a cheerful affair. :-)
