Today is one of the most significant days in the Christian calendar. Along with Christmas and Easter, Pentecost is a day of reverence and reflection and I invite you to consider the following from the pen of James Montgomery, song 196 in the Song Book: ‘Lord God, the Holy Ghost, In this accepted hour, As on the day of Pentecost, Descend with all thy power. The young, the old inspire With wisdom from above; And give us hearts and tongues of fire To pray and praise and love. The Founder, William Booth (1829-1912) understood the significance of Pentecost when he wrote the oft sung and inspiring words: Thou Christ of burning, cleansing flame, Send the fire! Thy blood-bought gift today we claim, Send the fire! Look down and see this waiting host, Give us the promised Holy Ghost, We want another Pentecost, Send the fire! As we worship today, this is the prayer of Commissioner Silvia and I: God of Elijah, hear our cry; Send the Fire! To make us fit to love or die, Send the Fire! To burn up every trace of sin, To bring he light and glory in, The revolution now being, Send the Fire! On this Pentecost Sunday, I pray that there will be a great moving of God’s spirit among His people around the world. I pray that you will be sensitive to His calling and invitation and consider – ‘what is He asking of me’? To make our weak hearts strong and brave, Send the Fire! To live a dying world to save, Send the Fire! O see us on thy altar, this very day, To crown the offering now we pray, Send the Fire! May God continue to bless and use you as you worship and minister for Him.
