Today is our first full day of retirement. We got here about 7 P.M. last night and were greeted with hugs and smiles from our dear friends Rhonda and Bill. If I told you their last names, it would be a dead give away to our location for some of you so I will keep that information to myself for now. They fixed a scrumptious dinner for us that began with fresh motzarella cheese and tomatoes marinated in oil and herbs, followed by a couple racks of BBQ ribs, sweet potatoes, fresh green beans from the their garden, a delightful light garden salad and a very tasty fruit salad. I ate so much I thought I would burst but it was much too yummy to stop. We sat up talking until after 11 P.M. After all, we had about 4 years of catching up to do. This morning after a hearty breakfast of bacon, eggs, fried zucchini, fresh Bing cherries, pink grapefruit and whole grain English muffins, we were able to tour the community and learn some of the history of the area. I will post a couple of pictures from our jaunt and see if you can determine the community name. Our first stop was Living Lord Lutheran Church and got the grand tour of the building and grounds. It reminded me a lot of the little church that Sam and I were married in down on Marathon Key in Florida. This church was immaculately clean and it is evident that the people of the church care and want the community to find it an inviting place to visit. From the church we drove downtown to a local farmers market. What a treat that was for me. We purchased some fragrant hand soaps, some zuchinni brownies, and some grass fed beef. Sam had to have the beef, and if my refrigerator wasn’t already full, I would have happily paid for some farm fresh eggs. But, alas, the camper fridge lacks a lot of room so I opted out of that idea. Our next adventure took us to the Harriet Taylor Upton house. I did not have an opportunity to go inside, but I did get a picture of the exterior and the historical monument. I will post them on Facebook so that you can see them but I doubt that you will be able to read much of the monument. My camera has chosen not to cooperate and I used my phone to take the photos. According to the Tribute Chronicle, Harriet Taylor Upton was born on December 17, 1854 in Ravenna, Ohio and moved to this town in 1860. She joined the National Women’s Suffrage Association in 1890. She was an instrumental player in this women’s movement holding many offices over the course of many years. In 1891 she founded the Ohio Women in Convention and held offices of treasurer and then president of these two entities spanning the years of 1894-1920. In 1926 she ran for the U.S. House of Representatives. Her home is in the process of being restored. It had been converted to a rental property, divided with many rooms and apartments. The home was then placed on the National Register of Historic Homes and returned to its original glory. Today the house is completely furnished in antique furniture that was all donated by people from the community. Now, people can rent the facility for weddings, parties, showers and business meetings. Ken Conklin, the man most responsible for the renovation project, states that the work will never be done. There will always be upkeep. Now, Bill and Sam are playing golf while Rhonda and I sit by the pool enjoying the beautiful weather. This evening we will attend the Greek Festival and partake of their tasty fare for dinner. Tomorrow morning, we will be at Living Lord to hear Bill preach and who knows where we will go from there. Have a great rest of the day and good luck guessing where we are at. Once we have departed this destination, I will confirm the name of the town and let you know who was able to connect the dots!
