Today is the 30th anniversary of the death of Marvin Gaye, by gunshot at the hands of his father, Marvin Gay, Sr. Marvin Gaye was a genius whose work will live on and a troubled man whose tragic life is a very interesting, enlightening and entertaining story. I highly recommend Michael Eric Dysons book Mercy Mercy Me for a look at his life and art and his place within the framework of African American culture. Divided Soulby David Ritz is a good biography of Marvin, providing a window into his personal world and the struggle between the sacred and profane which ended in tragedy on this day, 30 years ago.
