Today is the 372nd anniversary of the birth of Isaac Newton 25 December 1642 – 20 March 1726). One of the most celebrated luminaries of the 17th C and modern science. Here two famous quotes from Issac Newton: If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants., This comes from a Newton letter to Robert Hook Hooke, 5 Feb. 1676. It becomes one of the famous quote, Although it was and old metaphor of at least the 12th century “Nanos gigantum humeris incidents “ translated to” dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants “. I believe it has been taken out of context, and may not represent what was meant. It may be a sarcastic and veiled insult remark directed against Robert Hooke, who had some scientific discussion with Newton on the Optical Theories. The two men remained enemies until Hooke’s death. My favourite Newton quote, albeit not very widely used, is Hypotheses non fingo which means “ I frame (or create) no hypotheses, I like young scientist to consider, as it represents the application of scientific method essence. The quote came from his General Scholium, of the second) edition of the Principia (1713) as I have not as yet been able to discover the reason for these properties of gravity from phenomena, and I do not frame hypotheses. For whatever is not deduced from the phenomena must be called a hypothesis; and hypotheses, whether metaphysical or physical, or based on occult qualities, or mechanical, have no place in experimental philosophy. In this philosophy particular propositions are inferred from the phenomena, and afterwards rendered general by induction” Ghazwan Butorus Source: goo.gl/ZKfljj
