Today is the 8 year anniversary of the loss of the Crew of San Bernadino National Forest Engine 57 on the 40,000 acre Esperanza fire outside of Banning CA. On October 26th, 2006, 5 USDA Forest Service Wildland Firefighters lost their lives in the Esperanza Tragedy. The crew of San Bernardino National Forest Engine 57 were defending an unoccupied home located at the top of a steep drainage when the fire overran them. Killed in the Line of Duty were Capt. Mark Loutzenhiser, 43; FEO Jess McLean, 27; AFEO Jason McKay, 27; F/F Pablo Cerda, 23 and F/F Daniel Hoover-Najera, 20. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esperanza_Fire wlfalwaysremember.org/incident-lists/56-esperanza-fire-entrapment.html There were many factors leading to the tragedy but one was the lack of proper clearances and other wildfire preparation measures. Prepare your home for wildfire it may save more than your home... RIP, the fire service never forgets.
