Today is the anniversary of the great French pianist Marcelle - TopicsExpress

Today is the anniversary of the great French pianist Marcelle Meyers death: on this day in 1958, she suffered a heart attack while at the piano in her sisters home in Paris and died that evening in hospital, aged only 61. At the age of 20, she played at the premiere of Saties Parade - Claude Debussy was in attendance and in the year before he died he would coach the young Meyer how to play his Preludes (she had already studied with Ricardo Viñes, who had premiered many of his works). She recorded the complete Preludes the year before she died (they were first issued over three decades later), having already recorded other works for the label Les Discophiles Français, such as his seldom-played Masques. Also unissued for decades, this incredible reading demonstrates Meyers marvellously varied palette of colours, magnificently refined pedalling, broad dynamic range, and vibrant rhythm.
