Today is the beginning of Severe Weather Awareness Week in Georgia. Each day, the National Weather Service in Peachtree City and the Georgia Emergency Management Agency will focus on a particular aspect of severe weather safety. Kennesaw State University, in an attempt to have a better prepared and better informed population about emergency preparedness and severe weather, will also be sending out information each day to coincide with NWS and GEMA. Today is Family Preparedness Day. Family Preparedness is essential for severe weather safety. It is very important to be prepared for whatever weather event could arise. To do so, it is important to have a plan and have a kit. Since you and your family may or may not be all together when weather strikes, we must each develop a communication plan. How are we going to contact each other? Where will our family meeting place be if getting home is not an option? Each family dynamic is different, so each plan should be different from family to family. Having an emergency kit is also very important. Some basic kit items include: Water - one gallon per person per day, for at least three days Food – a three-day supply of non-perishable food. Don’t forget the can opener too! Radio – batter powered or hand crank radio so you can receive emergency notifications if cellular service is interrupted Flashlight – With extra batteries! Head lights are a good idea too so you can keep your hands free First Aid Kit – including medications that family members need These are just a few basic items. For a full list of information for family preparedness, including planning guides, emergency kit checklists, emergency app information, and much more, check out ready.ga.gov or ready.gov .
