Today is the birthday of Rosalind Elsie Franklin (25 July 1920 – 16 April 1958), one of the pioneering X-ray crystallographers of the 20th Century. Her work was crucial for Crick and Watsons discovery of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), the fundamental basis of storing biological i.e. genetic, information. Until recently, Franklins scientific contributions to the discovery of the double helix was often overlooked as her work was published third, in the series of three DNA Nature articles.
