Today is the birthday of musician, singer, and songwriter John Hartford (December 30, 1937 – June 4, 2001). Hartford first gained national attention as the songwriter of Gentle on My Mind, which became a huge hit for Glen Campbell. He would become a part of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, and then The Glen Campbells Good Time Hour show. Hartford would record with Vassar Clements, Tut Taylor and Norman Blake as the Aero-Plain band. The group is considered to be the founders of the New Grass sound, paving the way for groups like The New Grass Revival. He played and recorded old time music in the 1980s and 1990s, and contributed to the O Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack. In addition to music, one of his other passions was steamboats. Hartford earned a steamboat pilots license in the 1970s, and piloted during summers on the Mississippi River on the steamboat Julia Belle Swain. #happybirthday #johnhartford youtu.be/GNHqG9lPcaE
