Today is the birthday of one of the 20th century’s master photographers: Charles Sheeler. Beginning his career shortly after school, Sheeler had his first big break as a painter, with exhibitions at the Macbeth Gallery. After a trip to Paris, he decided that Modernist painting did not have a profitable future, so the intrepid artist began doing commercial photography, training himself on a 5 dollar Kodak Brownie camera. Charles Sheeler’s photography was often based around architecture, and more specifically industrial buildings. In line with his photography work, his paintings began reflecting the images taken by his camera and eventually becoming a proponent of Precisionism. In 1921, along with Paul Strang, Sheeler filmed a short documentary called Manhatta. Enclosed is one of the many photos the artist took while shooting the Ford Red River Rouge complex in 1927, entitled: Criss-Crossed Conveyors, River Rogue Plant, Ford Motor Company.
