Today is the birthday of soul singer Otis Redding (September 9, 1941 – December 10, 1967). Redding started out his music career as a member of Little Richards backing band, The Upsetters. He went on to be a member of Johnny Jenkins and The Pinetoppers. Otis drove Jenkins to Stax Studios in Memphis, TN in 1962 for a recording session. Redding drove Jenkins because he didnt have a drivers license. The session ended earlier than expected, and Otis was allowed to record a couple of songs. One of them, These Arms of Mine, was heard by Stax Studio Chief Jim Stewart and he signed Redding to a contract. The rest is history. Ive Been Loving You Too Long, Try a Little Tenderness, Tramp with Carla Thomas and Sittin On The Dock of the Bay are just a few of his well known hits. youtu.be/-RW142SPrL8
