Today is the day that I finally be able to announce very big news concerning my judo career. Today I received approval from the IJF (International Judo Federation) to compete for an other country. From the 1st of januari I’ll be a member of the Israeli-an Judo Team, instead of my home country the Netherlands. It was a really hard and though decision to make, one with mixed feelings. Mixed feelings because it was always an honor to fight for my country, I had a great time with my team mates and won several medals under the dutch flag. There are several reasons why I felt that I had to make this decision such as: the plan to centralize by The Dutch Judo Federation, the JBN forced me to quit the partnership with my coach Ben Rietdijk and of course because of my big injury (knee ligament) which put me such a length behind my competitor in my weight category; Kim Polling. I made the choice for Israel because they can facilitate me in the best way possible to reach my goals along with my coach Ben Rietdijk. Our goal: Medal Rio 2016! I will be training in both Israel as in the Netherlands which makes it possible to continue the valuable relation with my strength&conditioning coach Paul Lammers and Judo coach Bas Meerveld. Ben will continue to coach me on the big tournaments and I’ll have also one of the best and experienced coach on my side (Shany Hershko). Shany is the coach of the Israeli-an womens team, he coached and trained a woman World Champion and achieved many medals on the European with both men as women. I’m very grateful and honored by the way Shany, the Israeli-an Judo Federation, and the Israeli-an olympic Comité welcomed me and my coach in their team. Like I said I regret the fact that I leave the Dutch Team because of all the good times and memories. Therefore I would like to thank all coaches, medical staff, team mates, staff of the JBN and of course Marjolein van Unen as head coach. There is also a happy and proud feeling: I will compete for the Israeli-an Judo team and will do whatever it takes to reach my goal, a medal in Rio 2016! Er gingen al wat geruchten rond maar vandaag mag ik het dan eindelijk bekend maken! Ik heb vandaag officieel bericht gekregen van de IJF (Internationale Judo Federation) dat ik uit mag gaan komen voor een ander land. Per 1 januari zal ik deel uit gaan maken van het Israëlisch Judo Team. Voor mij is dit een hele zware beslissing met een heel erg dubbel gevoel. Jarenlang heb ik het naar mijn zin gehad in het Nederlandse Judo Team en heb ik hele mooie prestaties behaald onder de Nederlandse vlag. Desondanks heb ik de keuze moeten maken om voor een ander land uit te komen. De belangrijkste redenen voor dit besluit waren o.a. de centralisatie van de JBN, het niet meer mogen samen werken met mijn coach Ben Rietdijk en mijn kruisband blessure die mij op een achterstand heeft laten lopen in de nationale concurrentie strijd. Omdat Israël mij alles te beiden heeft om de Olympische Spelen te behalen heeft mij dit doen besluiten om voor Israël uit te komen. Samen met het Israëlisch Team en mijn coach Ben ga ik voor een medaille in RIO 2016. De komende jaren zal ik regelmatig in Israël te vinden zijn voor trainingen maar ik blijf in Nederland wonen en trainen. Op deze manier kan ik blijven samenwerken met mijn coach Ben en mijn trainers Paul Lammers en Bas Meerveld. Mijn team van trainers wordt nu versterkt door de Israëlisch bondscoach Shany Hershko, die onder ander al een wereldkampioen heeft opgeleid en meerdere Europese medailles heeft behaald met verschillende judoka’s. Ik ben erg dankbaar voor de manier waarop de Israëlisch Judo Federatie en coach Shany mij en mijn coach Ben Rietdijk hebben ontvangen. Daarentegen vind ik het heel erg jammer dat ik afscheid moet gaan nemen van het Nederlandse Judo Team, waar ik een ongelofelijk leuke en mooie tijd mee heb gehad. Hierbij wil ik dan ook alle coaches, de medische staf, de medewerkers van de JBN en bondscoach Marjolein van Unen bedanken voor afgelopen jaren. Ik had heel graag voor Nederland willen blijven judoën maar ik zal er echt ALLES aan doen om straks die OS medaille binnen te halen en dit samen met mijn huidige coach.
