Today is the day toll relief on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge officially kicked in for Staten Island E-ZPass holders, with rebates applied for all tolls paid since April 1. Islanders will now pay an effective toll rate of $5.50 for each westbound trip. The toll relief program was created by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state Legislature in February, in an agreement shepherded by state Sen. Andrew Lanza (R-Staten Island) and Assemblyman Michael Cusick (D-Mid-Island). The toll relief package also reduces tolls by 20 percent for commercial E-ZPass holders who make more than 10 trips monthly.
