Today is the first day of the sacred month of the Hindu god Shiva or Siva. It entails special days of celebration and fasting and dressing in special ways. Ironically we asked our students to dress in native garb on this the last day of the seminar here in Pokhara, Nepal. About half of the girls did, none of the boys did. I find in each of these cultures, the young ladies are far more motivated towards education, cultural change, and new roles in their society, than the men. Indeed, probably two-thirds of my students are women. One of the art forms is the henna decorations on girls hands and arms. Unlike tattoos, they are usually flowery with quiet messages, and will disappear in time. Here are some examples of students in my seminar.
