Today is the last Friday before Christmas. West Dorsets currently gloomy, joyless empty second homes will get their short winter blast of occupation as the 4x4s trundle down from the home counties, loaded to the gunwhales with presents and supplies bought elsewhere. Some will have planned ahead: Ocado and other delivery vans will supply the groceries that could have been bought from local businesses were it not for a shortage of time and slightly inconvenient old town parking, rather than car-friendly retail parks. In Lyme, not for the first time, the we have a place here visitors will bemoan the lack of a butcher in the town, unaware of the inherent irony of their complaint. Oh - and well get to see a few dozen pairs of red trousers. Merry Christmas!
