Today is the last day of classes for Converse students. Good luck to all as they head into exam week! We are excited to welcome Vicki Hunt Cox 72 back home as our commencement speaker on May 17. A little about this fascinating alumna: When you aim for the sky, breaking the glass ceiling is bound to happen. For Vicki Cox, a distinguished career with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) can easily be traced back to her early interests in science at Converse College. After obtaining a degree in Physics from Converse and a Master’s degree from East Carolina University in 1974, Cox served as Chief of Physics and Scientific Director of the European Office of Aerospace Research and Development in London. Following high-level positions that took her from the testing of the Hubble Telescope for NASA to the Director of International Technology Programs for the Secretary of Defense, Cox was appointed in 2009 to lead the FAA’s multi- billion dollar project called NextGen. Her leadership with NextGen was instrumental in developing new systems for air traffic management and will ensure that, by 2020, the United States shifts from radar-based air traffic control to satellite-based systems using 21st century technologies– irrefutably the most significant and innovative advancement in air transportation since WWII. Since retiring from the FAA in 2013, Cox has served on the Executive Steering Committee for the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Aviation 2014 Conference and has recently initiated a consulting practice. Cox and her husband Dan Grady live in Arlington, Virginia.
