Today marked the 138th Birth Anniversary of Speaker Gil M. Montilla Senate Profile: Gil Montilla Sugar Magnate; Philippine Sugar Administrator; formerly, Speaker, first National Assembly (1935-38); president. Southern Investments and Management Corporation; etc.; res., 3645 Taft Avenue Extension, Pasay, Rizal. Born in Hinigaran, Negros Occidental, on September 11, 1876; son of Domingo Montilla and Potenciana Miranda. He attended the Ateneo de Manila, where he graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1896, and the University of Sto. Tomas where he took a course in law. He joined the Revolutionary Forces as commander of the battalion stationed at Binalbagan and Pulupandan, Negros Occidental. He then successively held the positions of Municipal Teacher, Municipal Secretary, and Municipal President of Isabela; elected Representative to the Philippine Legislature, from the 3rd District of Negros Occidental, 1912-16 and 1916-19; then Provincial Governor of Negros Occidental; and Senator from the Eighth Senatorial District comprising Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, Antique and Palawan, 1931-35. In the first Commonwealth elections held September 17, 1938, he was elected a Member of the National Assembly from the 3rd District of Negros Occidental and was elected Speaker of said Assembly, 1935-38. He was appointed Philippine Sugar Administrator, November 29, 1938, to succeed Mr. Rafael Alunan, now Secretary of the Interior. He is the President of the Nacionalista Party, and is a Roman Catholic. Married to Mercedes Montilla.
