Today marks my five year Cancerversary. Its big not just because its another year, but also because I become another kind of data now. Survival rates are often quoted in 5-year and 10-year percentages, so these are milestones of sorts. For my staging, its 68% 5-year survival and 56% 10-year survival, with a 60% likelihood of recurrence. I realize that these are historical numbers, and the percentages may be higher for my cohort. I dont dwell on this information, but Im empowered by it. There is no cure- one can only be N.E.D. (No Evidence of Disease). Today Im happy to be more data named NED. Thinking of those still fighting and those who have lost the battle.
