Today marks one year in Command of the 10th Transportation (Terminal) Battalion for LTC Megan A. Gumpf and CSM Scott Reed. Every day we come to work excited to learn something new because of the amazing things that our Waterborne Troopers do each day. Subject matter experts in some of the Army’s most unique fields, every Soldier brings a special trait to this Battalion and to the Army. We would like to take the opportunity to thank EVERY Soldier and EVERY family member who makes sacrifices on a daily basis for the freedom of our Nation. A year in review… there is entirely too much to name everything, but looking back we would like to highlight just a few of the accomplishments of the great Troopers of the Waterborne Family… The 10th Transportation Battalion has spent the past 12 months conducting split-based operations across the globe, spanning from the continental United States to Hawaii, the Bahamas, Cuba, Guantanamo Bay, the Philippines, Korea, Japan, Kuwait, and Afghanistan. The Battalion has planned and executed over 612 ground taskings and 330 vessel taskings. We couldn’t lead a Transportation Terminal Battalion consisting of 11 Units and over 1,100 Soldiers without the fantastic leaders within the Battalion! Our Company Commanders and First Sergeants, Officers, Warrant Officers, and Non-commissioned Officers have spearheaded our capabilities to provide Mission Command of Terminal, Heavy Boat, Logistics Support Vessel, Floating Craft, Cargo Transfer, Seaport Operations, Transportation Support, Cargo Documentation and Harbormaster Operations. And our Soldiers are the future Leaders who play a critical role in every mission. Our Waterborne Family Members also participated in countless events at the Battalion and Company levels to support our Soldiers. Most notable was the tremendous effort that the spouses and Soldiers put forth to honor SSG Justin Johnson by attending his funeral and services in Florida, his Memorial Service on Fort Eustis, and assisting his family members, the Soldiers, and other family members throughout. Our Waterborne spouses spearheaded the efforts at countless Battalion and unit level events to include, the Halloween Festival at 3rd Port, Holiday events, the G.I. Jane/Joe “Competition,” and numerous events in support of our deployed Soldiers and/or families in need of assistance. They maintained family readiness focus and reintegrated the families AND single Soldiers of the 358th ACDD and 492nd Transportation Detachments following deployments. They are diligently planning for the return of 359th ICTC… and they CONTINUE to serve in our honor EVERYDAY! We couldn’t run a battalion without the fantastic support of our families! ... This year we have also welcomed FORTY-SIX newborn babies to the Waterborne family! (Just one more thing we couldn’t do without the support of our “Other Halves.”) TWO of our units placed in the top three for the Supply Excellence Award at the XVIII Airborne Corps level (97th : 1st place and 149th: 3rd place). 97th went on to place seventh, overall, in the FORSCOM 2012 Supply Excellence Award competition. Our units were also recognized with Brigade Safety and Retention awards throughout the year. 73rd Transportation Company was the recipient of the National Defense Transportation Association Active Component Military unit of the year award. Across the Battalion, this year we had 17 distinguished honor graduates and three Distinguished Leadership Awardees for PME schools, and one SAMC winner (SSG Chopito)! SSG Golden and SSG Chopito (359) both earned Battlefield Promotions in Afghanistan! SGT Eddie Partee won the Brigade NCO of the Year and placed 3rd as the XVIII Airborne Corps NCO of the Year! SPC (now SGT) Genovese won the Brigade Soldier of the Quarter earlier in the year and PFC Ferry won the Brigade Soldier of the 3rd Quarter. CW3 Byron Dixon won the XVIII Airborne Corps PBO of the Year for the Supply Excellence Award Category II. He went on to win Phase I at the FORSCOM level and continues to compete for FORSCOM Phase II for the opportunity to compete at the Army level. Lieutenants Bryce Livingston and Blaine O’Reilly were selected to represent the Fort Eustis Army 10-Miler Team for both last October and again this upcoming Fall… AND they were selected to represent the ARMY on the All-Army Marathon Team to compete this Fall at the USMC Marathon! Our Battalion Color Guard has represented our Battalion, the Brigade, and even the Installation at various military and community events. In Fall 2012, the Waterborne Battalion earned 15 commendable ratings areas during the Brigade and Corps level XVIII Airborne Corps ORA inspections. Leaders at all levels took an aggressive stance on reducing the number of Medical Non-Deployable Soldiers in the Battalion, resulting in a decrease from 286 to 83! Our NCOs led the brigade in retention for FY 13, exceeding 150% on unit mission. 393rd and 492nd fielded the Harbormaster Command and Control center (HCCC) to support our fellow military branches in Mission Command of all watercraft. The fantastic leaders and Soldiers ensured success during one of the most complex Combined/JLOTS exercises in history, involving the largest watercraft equipment draw in 20 years out of the Army Prepositioned Stocks (APS-4) in Yokohama, Japan and a voyage to Pohang, Korea. In Korea, we joined forces with various units across the globe to form “Task Force-10” to support with a Headquarters (HHD), a Harbormaster Command and Control Center (HCCC), 1x LSV, 2 LCUs (97th), a Large Tug (73rd), the BD-Crane (73rd), an LCM-8 MOD II (1098th), and the Modular Causeway System (331). The staff and leaders developed a progressive and executable Road to War for the short notice deployment of the 359th ICTC, in addition to the deployments of 393rd Harbormaster Detachment and the 1099th Transportation Detachment (LSV-6), where all three of the units are currently serving. Our tremendous units resourced crews for vessel and ground operations in support of the US Military Academy cadet orientation in September 2012 (97th) ; the Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore (JLOTS) 2012 exercise at Fort Story, Virginia (HHD, 335, 1098th, 73rd ,97th, 393rd); five iterations of Operation Trident Arch (149th SOC); Operation Keen Sword in Japan in November 2012 (97th TC); Operation Freedom Banner (1098th); and continuous rotations of the Landing Craft Utility (LCU) crews in support of US Army South. Our watercraft technical experts flawlessly supervised the induction of the LSV-1 into the high visibility $19 million On Condition Cyclic Maintenance (OCCM) and Service Life Extension Programs (SLEP), as well as the OCCM of the Large Tug, two Small Tugs, and four LCUs. Our remarkable Soldiers have ALL taken an active role in taking care of each other, diminishing incidences of off-duty misconduct, improving morale, and instilling confidence among our Soldiers, NCOs, Warrant Officers, and Officers. The list continues to go on… but the bottom line is that we are truly proud of all of the accomplishments of the Waterborne Troopers! We have had a great first year in command because we are surrounded by professional Soldiers who motivate us. We look forward to the start of another year… In loving memory, we Salute SSG Justin Johnson and his family. Waterborne! LTC Megan A. Gumpf and CSM Scott Reed
