Today marks the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I. Did you know that the women of Kappa Kappa Gamma :: University of Toronto Chapter were the first to become involved in war- and relief-related work after World War I spread across Europe? Both collegians and alumnae knitted and rolled bandaged and toiled tirelessly in newly created jobs for women in factories, offices and on farms. Once the United States entered the war in April 1917, many more thousands of Kappas volunteered with groups such as the YWCA and engaged in work efforts similar to those of their Canadian sisters. Most outstanding of all the varied Kappa efforts during this time was Fraternity sponsorship of the work of member Dorothy Canfield Fisher, Ohio State Kappa Kappa Gamma, in alleviating the suffering of war-scarred children in Bellevue-Meudon, a Paris suburb where Dorothy lived. Kappas responded overwhelmingly to Dorothys 1917 appeal for help printed in The Key of Kappa Kappa Gamma, sending clothes, shoes, supplies and money that directly helped children and their families and enabled Dorothy to arrange for a Red Cross doctor to regularly examine hundreds of ailing and orphaned children. Today, The Kappa French Relief Project started by Dorothy has been taken over by the Red Cross. *Adapted from History 2000: Kappa Kappa Gamma Through the Years
