Today marks the anniversary of the 1995 mortar attack on Markale Market in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Of all the incidents during the wartime siege of the city, this was one of the most horrendous. A police officer who investigated the incident who testified at the ICTY described what he saw as “the last, deepest circle of Dante’s hell.” The first Markale Market shelling was conducted on 5 February 1994. Both Markale Market massacres, claiming some 300 victims, were carried out by the Army of Republika Srpska. According to the Tribunal’s findings, they were part of a campaign of sniping and shelling, with the primary purpose of spreading terror among the civilian population. The ICTY has sentenced former Bosnian Serb Army commanders Stanislav Galić and Dragomir Milošević for crimes committed during the Siege of Sarajevo, including the Markale massacres. #NeverForget
