Today marks the end of National Egg Week (6th-12th Oct 2014) so lets celebrate this humble little hard-shelled nugget of nutrition. Eggs are a great source of protein with an average of 6g in one large egg - thats twice as much as 12 almonds (although almonds and vegetable protein definitely have their place in a healthy well-balanced diet) Eggs contain a high level of essential amino acids which are building blocks our bodies need to help build muscle and require for other vital body functions. Eggs are a very cheep addition and main component to a meal - dunky egg and toast or egg sandwiches - have you forgotten how good they taste? They are eggstremely versatile - boil, poach, scramble, omelette or dry fry are just a few ways to include eggs in your meals. Interesting fact: According to the Daily Express, a kiwi’s egg may weigh as much as a quarter of its total body weight, the highest such ratio for any bird. What an egg! ... What a bird! If you are not keen on the taste of eggs then why not use them to get active? Below are 2 challenges to get you moving with eggs: 1. Egg Rolling Boil an egg, decorate it if you wish, then take it and a friend to a small hill, lie horizontally to the incline and as your friend lets your egg free and rolls it down the hill, set off rolling and race your egg to the bottom! 2. Fancy attempting to beat a Guiness World Record? According to Guinessworldrecords the fastest 100 meters egg and spoon race is 19.39 seconds. This was set by Ashrita Furman, (USA) at St Johns University track in Queens, New York, USA, on 24 February 2011. They used a dessert spoon. If you try either of these share your attempts with me via message, email, photos or video. It would be great to see them. (please ensure you are medically fit to complete the above challenges and you attempt them at your own risk) A less active challenge but one I bet you will try next time you boil an egg is how fast can you shell an egg? The fastest time to shell one unpricked boiled egg is 5.59 seconds, achieved by Matthew Mark Mason (USA), in Wilmington, North Carolina, USA, on 15 January 2012. You want to try it dont you? : ) More fun with eggs! Hard boil them, then decorate them as your favourite sports person/personality then pop them in your loved ones pack up/lunch box as a healthy snack to make them smile - Im not yolking, this is great fun for all the family and a perfect activity for a relaxing Sunday afternoon. Enjoy your Sunday, however you choose to spend it, and lets raise a pan to the unassuming yet tasty, nutritious egg!
