Today, my all-forgiving and unconditionally loving Mother would have been 99! She made me crazy because she insisted on seeing the best in everyone. She was and always will be the best cook and gardener of all time. And, she was like the female version of St. Francis. Shed walk into the backyard and it looked like a Disney movie - all the little birds would come flying and tweeting and the squirrels would sit in front of her like she was giving them their marching orders. She really did think she was like a Dr. Doolittle. Youd hear her talking to the birds like, Oh hello Mr. Robin ... is that right? ... and then what ... mmm mmm mmm my oh my, I can see why youre so upset. In between her comments - the birds would tweet!! It really was something to behold. Shed read the blue jays the riot act because she felt they were too bossy. Encourage the sparrows because after all if they wanted to grow big and strong, they had to get their share of the bread shed put out. Dont you let those other birds bully you, you tell them your Aunt Marys watching them! I told you before, I thought all of that was too corny when I was young. Another reason why youth is wasted on the young. Im a late bloomer I guess. But, I sure get it now. She was a very unassuming, open-hearted, loving woman who preferred to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Shes another of those people who lived through the worst of times but made it the best of times for the rest of us.
