Today my campers were learning about the different parts of the piano in music class. At the end of the lesson they each were given an opportunity to play. Everyone that went up played a few notes or just tapped on random keys until one quiet camper volunteered. She sat down as all the others before her had and I was expecting a similar performance. Instead, she surprised everyone and effortlessly played the entire song My Heart Will Go On with no sheet music in front of her and didnt miss a single note. I was so blown away that I had tears in my eyes and after looking around the room I saw that I wasnt the only one. Its a funny thing working with individuals identified as disabled because all Ive continued to see this summer has been endless abilities and talents; in the form of chilling piano performances or in making others smile. And if Ive learned one thing this summer its that our abilities in life stretch only as far as we push our limits and as open we keep our minds.
