Today my employer allowed me to volunteer my services at the soup - TopicsExpress

Today my employer allowed me to volunteer my services at the soup kitchen with pay. I volunteer here in Charlotte for a LOT of things, but things I’ve volunteered for has NEVER touched me like it did today!! As men entered the church’s banquet hall, their heads were hanging low. I thought about today being Veteran’s Day. When I went from table to table, I asked if there were any veterans with us today. You should have seen the hands being raised up high as they lifted their heads. I thank each and one of them for their service. I know thanking them made them feel honored to have served their country. I wish it was a way I could help them get their self-esteem back, I wish I could house, feed, and clothe them. They all weren’t homeless. There were a few people there who looked like me and dress like as I did. They just can’t find a job and without a job, you can’t afford to pay for a place to live. We should never judge anyone and we should help people who are less fortunate than we are. I can’t describe how I felt as they watch me get into my BMW. Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful for whatever God blesses me with because I do work hard and I do help people. Today my lottery winning list has changed though. I don’t need a third car, I don’t need a house built, I don’t NEED anything…….they’re all wants. I need to be able to help people who are in need and that are what I want to do from the bottom of my heart. I left that soup kitchen a different person. I cried all the way back to my job. That was my first experience as a waitress and it was a lot!!!! They didn’t have to stand in a line; we all served them as they sat at their tables. I poured their water and tea for them, they wanted extra napkins, a cleaner spoon, ketchup, sugar, coffee, cream, you just name it and it was pleasure to be able to provide all of that for them. I made sure they all felt special even if it was for an hour or two. I wasn’t afraid to touch or talk to any of them. One man requested for a Bible and I promised him I was going to get him one even if it meant I had to go purchase one for him. When I went to the staff, they informed me that the Bibles were locked up and no one there had a key so I offered the lady $20 if she would go into the church and get a Bible from the church but she ended up finding a little Bible in one of the drawers. As he accepted the Bible, I felt the gratefulness in his heart and I pray that it will be a blessing to him.
