Today on POP WEEK Day 4: Robyn Robyn is the second Swede on - TopicsExpress

Today on POP WEEK Day 4: Robyn Robyn is the second Swede on the countdown. ABBA was also from Sweden, which now has me wondering if Sweden is some kind of wonderland for pop music. It also seems to be a wonderland for amazing hair, a trait that Robyn prominently possesses with her majestic white pixie cut. She also possesses the trait of embodying the spirit of modern pop music, which involves breaking away from big-label control. Those of you who were old enough to know how to turn a T.V. on in 1997 may remember seeing Robyn on Much Music. MTV didnt exist in Canada at that time unless you had a satellite dish, which was really expensive because satellite dishes in the 90s werent something you could just casually clamp on to the guardrail of your balcony. You actually needed a full sized satellite dish like the kind they have at a some kind of freaking NASA radio monitoring facility. In the twilight of this NASA-sided satellite dish era, Robyn actually charted on Billboards top 100 with tracks from her debut album like Do you know what it takes. She continued making typical late 90s-style radio pop until 2005 when she formed her own label to pursue her own artistic visions. Since then, this vision has included collaborating with Snoop Dogg, Royksopp, having a song with Jamaican slang that discusses how to put girl in fridge, and just generally showing everyone how out-of-the-box electro-pop can truly be. It also makes you wonder, how many pop stars could have been making legitimate music this whole time, but never got the opportunity to because they never knew it was possible to escape labels? #popweek
