Today on “Who’s Who” in the Israel-Palestine conflict: Edward Saïd The late Edward Wadie Saïd was a well-known Palestinian-American scholar, Arab activist, and university professor of English Comparative Literature at Columbia University. As an influential cultural critic, Saïd is best known for his book Orientalism (1979), a critical analysis of the impossibility for The West to write valid accounts of Middle Eastern affairs because their ideas are tainted by cultural biases and arrogance. Saïd argued for the establishment of a Palestinian state at the time of the establishment of Israel (1948). He emphasized equal political and human rights for the Palestinians in Israel - including the right of return. Said was a member of the PLO’s Palestinian National Council throughout the 1970s and 80s, though he resigned in 1991- in protest to the Oslo peace accords. Saïd was born to Palestinian Christian parents November 1935, and died of leukemia in September 2003. Edward Said on Orientalism: youtube/watch?v=xwCOSkXR_Cw
