Today on the Ultimate Hockey Show. December 27th,2014 on 1310am or 1310news 11am-1pm!! A bit of a different show today folks. Next week well be neck deep in the World Juniors and the show will reflect that...today because its the holiday season we look in to our back yard and talk to three men from Ottawa with some very interesting hockey connections. 1) Greg McLaughlin. Starting in 1947 and running into the late 1990s the upper part of the Gatineau region featured several small towns that played in a hockey league. Nothing unusual about that. Except this was a league where all the hockey was played in what we refer to today as the ODR, out door rinks. It was played by men, not boys. It was physical; full contact hockey and if tempers flared and you dropped the gloves, you served your five minutes but were expected to play on after that. As we see in the NHL. The really unique feature of this eclectic group, to play on these teams you had to have property in the area. This was such a unique hockey story at the time it caught the attention of Steve Dryden of The Hockey News and their magazine did a story on it. Today we catch up with Greg McLaughlin who played for the Venosta Shamrocks, a 13 time league winner including five-in-a-row as the times, the climate and the temperatures both on and off the ice, changed. 2) Ken Tasker. Ken is an Ottawa native, still lives in the area and is a retired former pro hockey player. As so many who play the game with some notoriety he always gave of us time and energy to help others receiving the following awards for doing so; Hardest Working Player Award & Fan Favorite Award - Wheeling Nailers Hockey Club ECHL (2001/2002) Community Service Award & Fan Favorite Award- 2 yrs Toledo Storm Hockey Club ECHL (1998/2000) PHPA Nomination for East Coast Hockey League Overall Community Service Award ECHL (1999/2000) Jeff Myatt Community Service Award - Fan Favorite Award - Amherst Mooseheads Jr. Hockey Club MJHL (1994/1995) Ken was also known for something else. A participant in what hockey fight historians call the greatest hockey fight of all time. A noted battler with 300+ scraps on his resume, he embodied what the role and term enforcer meant in the era that he played and the leagues he skated in. As quiet, kind and caring as he was off the ice, once on his field of play and battle he transformed into one of the best fighters the minors have ever seen. Well catch up with him, find out what hes doing and talk about the classic - Tasker-Senn. ( warning, both audio on air today and video posted here are not for the faint of heart. Please do not watch if you have a heart condition, hate fighting in hockey or work for the Globe and Mail or the National Post ) 3) Dan Cowley. The name Cowley is synonymous with hockey greatness. Dans father Bill, AKA Boston Bill Cowley or Bill cowboy Cowley, which ever you prefer, was a Stanley Cup winner, a scoring champion, an MVP and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1968. Dan had his own professional career and like Mr. Tasker above, Dan played a hard nosed style in an era that required guts to put a sweater on. Among Dans opponents on several nights were the Hanson Brothers from Slapshot fame, whose real names were Jeff and Steve Carlson and Dave Hanson. Well talk to Dan about his days in the minors battling guys like that, about his father, the late Bill Cowley and additionally Dan has been a huge supporter of girls hockey in our area through his current occupation, owner of the local Don Cherrys by allowing them to host many fundraising functions in his restaurant. Well cover all of that off with a man who is a very dear friend. Don Cherrys Ottawa... https://youtube/watch?v=Vk8v3opkN6s
