Today retired Columbus Police Officer John R. Skobel Jr. was laid to rest. At his graveyard service, the “Last Call” was made. Police radios were turned on and, in the silence, a dispatcher called twice for Officer Skobel by his badge number, 078. Both times there was no reply, only silence. Then the dispatcher made the last and final call for unit 078 and acknowledged that Officer Skobel is 10-42 – ending his tour of duty. The citizens of Columbus and Bartholomew County and his fellow police officers are forever grateful for John Skobel’s 20 years of public service to the Columbus Police Department. May he rest in peace. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Officer Skobel’s wife, Sheila, and his other family members and friends.
