Today someone I work with asked me if I am really American or am - TopicsExpress

Today someone I work with asked me if I am really American or am posing as one. She continued with statements along the vein of, Its okay to just tell me the truth, that you are Polish or Russian, I wont tell people. When I insisted that, Yes, I am in fact American and that, Yes, both my parents were also born in America, she was adamant that I was lying and followed up with a long argument that it simply wasnt possible because my name does not sound American. When I told her my name was through my fathers family, and to the best of my knowledge is Latvian, she had me write down Latvia in both Arabic and English so she could find out more about my real country. Sometimes, I forget how privileged I am to not have people question my nationality regularly. I apologize to anyone who ever has to go through it. Being American means I can have a name from any damn where I please - hell I can even make it up, and I LOVE that. Accordingly, Im debating future possible last names such as American or Amerikiiya but simultaneously changing my middle name to isnot or istheleast just to confuse her.
