Today started early for me, so Im doing this late. A busy day, so Im just now getting to do my post of honor for today. Today I honor a great icon in my life. This person brought me so much laughter and pleasure it is hard to believe at this stage of life just how much this person meant to my life. I often went to her house throughout my early years, and I have many great memories. I will have to narrow this down to a few special times with her. Today I honor my paternal grandmother, Rachel Bone. Grandmother was a unique individual. She has to be the genetic pass down that makes me talk so much. She was constantly talking about something. My favorite and funniest memory is her comment, Wilson (my grandfather) and I never kissed until we were married. One of my cousins, the daughter of dads older brother Uncle Powell, had moved to Yuma, Arizona due to Uncle Powells asthma. They only came back to visit every other year. My cousins name was Carolyn. She and grandmother didnt get along. Carolyn always was trying to find a dig toward grandmother. Grandmother had a closet habit of dipping Garrett snuff. She thought no one knew. One day during a summer when Carolyn visited from Arizona, we were all sitting on the front porch of the old dog-run house Grandmother and Grandfather lived in. Grandmother came out where all the kids were and decided it was another lesson time regarding kissing. She told about never kissing grandfather until they were married. After telling us again for the umteenth time, Carolyn spoke up and said, If I was granddad I wouldnt kiss you either since you dip that nasty snuff. Well...all you-know-what broke loose. Carolyn had to run around the house to get away from Grandmother. My other memory to share is the great meals and treats she cooked on an old wood cook stove. They had no gas and only a limited amount of electricity. So, all things cooked came from this old wood cook stove. The best meals and cookies I can remember ever tasting. Their bedroom and the living room were the same room. The dog-run had been enclosed and was used to store things. On the other side of the dog-run was the bedroom I slept in. The feather bed was an experience I can still feel today. Even as a young boy it seemed the feather bed just took in my entire body. This was a winter experience and helped keep me warm. The bedroom was heated by a wood stove. This room also had the hand crank Victrola record player. If you wound it too tight the music would sound like the chipmonks. When the hand-crank drive started to need to be cranked again, the music would slow down to a low growl. Grandmother liked me a lot for some reason. All the grandchildren but Carolyn probably felt the same way. Grandmother loved to laugh. I am a blessed person to have known her. When she became unable to handle the daily chores in the old house, Dad moved her to a house close to where we lived in Batesville, and she lived there until her death. She would play the piano and sing to old shape note hymns until she could no longer play. I honor her memory and the great times I enjoyed in her presence.
