Today the National Chairman NNA-Kenya conducted a meet the Nurses tour in Nakuru County referral hospital. This was preceded by a courtesy visit to the Deputy Medical Superintended and the Nursing Officer in charge of the hospital. In the courtesy meeting, the Chairman lauded the efforts of Nakuru county government in resolving the issues affecting nurses within the county. Nurses within the county have never gone without salaries since the onset of devolution and the county was ready and willing to implement the scheme of service for nurses by promoting and re-designating nurses once they receive their personnel files from the National government. During the ongoing Peri-operative Nurses Conference in Nakuru, the Governor H.E. Kinuthia Mbugua on learning that the county director nursing services had not been appointed as provided in the scheme of service instructed the CEC for health to appoint and re-designate a County Director of Nursing with immediate effect. All wards within Nakuru PGH have the offices for their in charges and tea rooms for nurses separated from the ward units. The facility has very high standards of hygiene and currently putting up a state of the art trauma centre for the county. Later on the chairman also conducted a hospital tour and verified the situation on the ground before proceeding for a nurses meeting. During the meeting which was also attended by the NNA-K County Chairman, National Vice Secretary, the hospital management, KNUN county branch chair and KNUN County secretary general as well as warring factions of the national leadership of the union, nurses expressed their frustrations with the constant wrangles in the union’s national leadership. After observing a minute of silence for Nurse Christine Lutiku from PGH Nakuru who passed on today at 4.00am in the ICU, the nurses urged for unity in order to address the issues affecting the profession in an organized manner rather than publishing immature media reports that excite and raise the expectations of the nurses and the clients they serve. The nurses noted that the call for unity of the union’s leadership superseded the need for a nurses’ strike and advised the leaders to forge unity and avoid wrangling over resources. It was noted that the scheme of service was approved by the government but implementation has stalled due to leadership wrangles that have prevented the appointment of nominees for the implementation committee from KNUN (the associations have already given their nominees). The Nurses urged the NNA-K Hon. National Chairman to mediate the warring factions and get a lasting solution since the wrangles are tainting the profession and the association bears responsibility for delivering the union. The nurses resolved that: 1. The lasting solution for the union is an urgent referendum to review the constitution with full participation of nurses and elections from the grassroots to replace the wrangling leaders with leaders of their choice and start a new journey as a profession. 2. The union leadership to unite before calling for a strike for more effect 3. Counties have unique needs that should be addressed per county rather than calling for blanket national strikes 4. The union leadership of the county should provide the nurses with copies of the constitution and allow them to understand their union better through civic education. 5. The leadership of the union should stop drawing huge sums of money from its treasury contrary to the court order since the union is not carrying out any meaningful activity that requires the resources. The leaders should also furnish members with statements of account to interrogate the allegations of corruption levelled against them
