Today the New England Diplomat-in-Residence spoke about careers in the Foreign Service -- I am so glad to have learned about the event from this page! The BSU Ambassador-in-Residence (yes, we have a retired ambassador assigned to the university this year) was also on hand. Both of them spoke passionately and convincingly about the importance of learning a second (or more) language. To be blunt, our university and our department have been sending the wrong signal by not REQUIRING a foreign language. No geography major should mistake that for an endorsement of monolingualism. We are going to get this changed as a policy; meanwhile, it is up to each student to get it changed for themselves. While at BSU -- whether you plan to work around the corner or around the world -- you should take advantage of the opportunity to learn another language. As you sign up for courses for the summer or fall, I hope you will give this serious thought. The following page is an oldie but, I hope, a goodie: webhost.bridgew.edu/jhayesboh/small_world.html
