Today the coal industry lost a great man! Since the late 1970s, Barry Hale has worked for the mines in Kentucky, Southern West Virginia, Virginia and been right here in Southern Illinois since 2007 when M-Class Mine was just a field. While Barry Hale was best known by hundreds- probably thousands- of miners from here to West Virginia as Mr. Hale or boss, I have a heartbroken young man sitting in this house tonight who decided the first time he met Barry several years ago that he was simply My Best Friend Barry. Im not sure I can even convey how ironic and precious it was that the same big, strong, tough man who was the boss at my husbands mine and in charge of so many mens lives every day was also the sweetest, kindest most gentle buddy to Nicolas and would play x-box with him or graciously give him the baseball he threw out at a Miners game. My husband, children, and I are so very thankful for all the fun memories we got to make with Barry, Paula, Morgan, Josh and family. We are all heartsick over Barrys passing but happy he is now at peace.
