Today the state stops for a horse race, where the rich quaff champagne in private marquees & talk stocks & bonds while horses with broken legs are shielded with white sheets & shot meters from expensive high heels that sink into the turf. Millions of dollars spent on gambling, where theres no real winners unless you count the guys who score drunk chicks whose dresses fall off them at 2am trying to flag a cab with smeared makeup making them look like leftovers from Halloween. At least football is for everyone, the races a leftover from the class divide, bogans disguised in fascinators. And so this is sport. Why isnt there a public holiday for the stolen generation? Why not for immigrant day when we honor those who have come here (all of us). Why not a broken family day when families reunite? Why not a pet appreciation day? Why not celebrate tolerance, equality, knowledge or even just how lucky we still are to have military free streets. But instead we will just be Aussies, and enjoy the sunshine & get drunk anyways. I wake & check outside, its truly spring and the leaves are green, and I wont be backing any fillies today.
