Today the stray kitten that came to our door a few weeks ago gave us a whole family of kittens, six. I imagine most of you have experienced kittens in your life but I never had been around a pregnant cat. She is the most loving little thing. As her belly grew and grew she became my constant companion in the evenings, laying close beside me on the sofa. She would stretch out with her back against my leg and I would rest my hand across her, feeling what felt like a dozen or more kicking and wiggling babies. It all seemed so unreal. And then this morning around 7:00, I had stretched out on the sofa for a few more minutes of sleep when the Mama Kitty hopped up beside me with her back to me. I reached my hand over her to rub her belly but she immediately put her back feet on my hand and grunted out a very small ball of fur. Whoa! I was not ready for that! I had a very nice box all prepared for her in the laundry room. Which is where I carried her and her tiny newborn. Anyway, the next 3 hours were spent watching varying colors of little furballs come into the world. It was wonderful! She knew what to do even though she was a very young mother. She cleaned each one as it arrived and eventually had them all lined up and nursing. Maybe its not a big deal to most people, but it was a very heart warming experience to me. One Im glad I had the chance to witness. When they are big enough that they actually have their eyes open, Ill post their picture. I know we cant keep six more cats, but for now Im going to enjoy every moment of them.
