Today this page passed 100,000 likes. Thank you for following. Im grateful for your comments, criticisms, sharing and enthusiasm. This page was created back in 2008 by my colleagues in the NYT marketing wing to help promote the first college essay contest, after which it languished, with posts appearing irregularly, sometimes only once a month. More than three years would pass before the page fell into my hands late in 2011. Im embarrassed to say I wasnt even on Facebook then and the marketing folks had to get me to join in order to be named an administrator. But I frankly didnt welcome the added work and posting expectations. The page had only a few hundred followers. I didnt know who the audience was and kind of dragged my feet in terms of putting much effort into it. Eventually, some months later, a book publicist friend of mine not-so-gently suggested that I actually, you know, USE the page to communicate directly with readers and would-be columnists. She gave me a few tips. I shouldnt have needed them, but I did. Now, in just a couple of years, this page has blossomed into the online community for the Modern Love column. In the past year alone it has added 75,000 followers. Whether Im posting about the columns themselves or offering writing advice or making announcements about Modern Love On Tour or sharing relevant news, I have come to find this space invaluable. Thanks for joining me here and making it a page (and a job) I enjoy.
