Today, those who haven’t mastered the clear, logical thought processes of mathematics often find the door to higher education barred to them. For kids trapped in poorer, under-performing schools, this is a special problem. Even those students with a great deal of native ability aren’t going to get the mathematical background necessary for college success. So what is to be done? Jaime Escalante (whose story is told in the 1988 movie “Stand and Deliver”) is an example of one possible approach: find excellent teachers and get out of their way. But in the 1980s, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics advocated a different solution.
