Today walked into a hair cutting saloon, in Trivandrum called AC - Mens Beauty Parlor. Outside in the entrance, there were many photographs displayed. It looked like all the Malayalam actors/stars have visited this place at least once for trimming their hair. Many of them were black and white pixs. The man who was posing in all these pixs with his famous customers is the owner. He was sitting inside as I walked in. He studied me quickly and instructed a young boy to attend to me. I was the only customer in that Beauty Parlor. The AC was not working or was not switched on. I settled down in the chair. The young boy asked me in Malayalam what is my joli (work). I said filmmaker. He got excited. Before he decided to take a pix of me and him, I quickly added, I make documentary films. Oh he said, a bit disappointingly. He settled down to the work. In saloons, I am used to listening to films songs, FM Radio or western music. But this was different. I heard a full raga alapana in carnatic music followed by the song. It looked like a live concert audio recording, though I couldnt recognize the female singer. Must be a local talent. I remembered some 2 years back, railway stations in Palakkad and Trichur would play carnatic music. I dont know if they still do that. Hair cutting job done, I looked at the mirror. I saw the boy looking more happier than me. I walked out beautified back on to the streets.
