Today was one of the hardest days Ive ever had to face. Guiding - TopicsExpress

Today was one of the hardest days Ive ever had to face. Guiding Eyes for the Blind Elvis will be retiring at the end of this year. While he is still doing his incredible job as my eyes each day, he is showing signs of stress due to the environments in which he has to work- ie slippery floors, open staircases. While I COULD ask Elvis to continue to work until the ripe old age of ten as I had hoped and planned, doing so wouldnt be fair to him mentally, and his happiness and health are the most important considerations in making such a difficult decision. This January, he will go live with his grandma, my mom up in Sherman CT, where he can play fetch, go swimming, and attempt to play with Roderick, my mothers not-so-in-love-with-dogs cat. I am heartbroken beyond what words can express, but after meeting with the trainer this morning, and talking extensively about his steady decline the past 6 months, I know in my heart it is the right thing to do. While no dog will ever replace my love, my friend, and my eyes for the past 5 years, I look forward to a new partnership with my next surely amazing Guiding Eyes Labrador. These dogs change lives and Elvis has certainly changed mine and made it better. I have inserted a piece I wrote a few months ago about this possibility (foreshadowing) for you to read. THank you all for your love and well wishes for us. He will be making his farewell tour this summer in Chicago, California, NYC, Canada, Wisconsin, Arizona, and Atlantic City International Triathlon.
