Today was probably one of the most awesome days I have experienced. My 86 year old godfather fell at home on Saturday and was taken to the hospital. First UPMC East, then transferred to Presby. My 84 year old godmother has been scared, worried and confused about his injuries because she hadnt seen him since he was taken to the hospital except for one day when their niece took her to the hospital. This is probably the longest time these two have been separated in the 63 years they have been married. I called my godmother today and asked her if she wanted to take a ride to the hospital, she immediately said yes. We got to Presby and found his room, it was a semi private room and he had the window bed. The curtain was drawn between the two beds. The nurse was in the room with him. She looked at us as I wheeled my godmother into the room in a wheelchair, (also carrying her walker) and asked if we were there to see him, we nodded yes. She told him that he had some visitors. He was sitting in a chair with a cervical collar on next to his bed. The next few moments were totally priceless....as she wheeled her walker into the room and around the curtain, HIS EYES LIT UP and he yelled to the nurse....THIS IS MY WIFE! He sat forward in his chair, (obviously in pain)she rolled over to him and they gave each other the biggest hug and kissed each other like two teenagers! My godfather burst into tears of joy. All through our visit, they held hands and my godfather occasionally leaned forward as far as he could, even in pain, and would ask for a kiss and little hug! At one point he jokingly (I think) asked her to sit on his lap!!! It was such a joy to see two people in their 80s that have been married for 63 years so much in love and each one so concerned about the other. It was truly an enlightening experience for me and such a joy to be part of. Get well soon Eddie ! Elsie, hes in good hands and will be back home soon !
