Today was the first day of The Zvika Force initiative. This morning I received a call from Gali Davidson, who works at the Animal Department in the Israel Ministry of Environmental Protection. Her voice sounded like a mixture of whispering and crying. A donkey in Baqa al-Gharbiyye needs help, she managed. I knew Gali has a soft spot for donkeys – whenever she arrives to the sanctuary, she always goes straight to them – but the amount of sadness in her voice surprised me. Im sending you the officers number, she added I cant talk, I am sick. Officer Zvika Heffner from the local police force of Baqa al-Gharbiyye told me that during a patrol he noticed a man driving a carriage with a donkey, constantly beating her with a thick stick. He hit her so hard, that when I stopped him I saw that one side of her backside is hairless, and the other has a gaping, bleeding hole, Officer Zvika told me. When we arrived to the Tayibe police station, I saw a female donkey tied up to a fence, with the carriage beside her. This sweet donkey, so small compared to the heavy carriage (which weight we tested ourselves), was forced to drag it all day long with luggage, and further more – suffer severe beating – which was clearly displayed upon her body. Officer Zvika told me that the local police force in Baqa al-Gharbiyye is fairly new, and that in the patrols he already had he saw some horses and donkeys carrying carriages – and promised that from now on, he will check every single one of them. It was in that moment, that we established The Zvika Force initiative in Baqa al-Gharbiyye. We would like to thank Gali Davidson who put us in contact with Officer Zvika, and also promised to help us with funding the rescue. We would also like to thank Officer Zvika, who did not turn a blind eye when he witnessed this abuse.
