Today was the last day of our after school Gardening and Cooking Club! We had the kids harvest everything from the garden that we planted on the first day (we thankfully had enough for each child to take something home), we did a little activity where they measured out and compared the amount of sugar in a variety of packaged food products, and then Brooke from our local Earth Fare volunteered to be there to make them green smoothies - she even used some of the greens the kids grew in their little garden! Every child at least tried a sip of the smoothie, and a few even asked for seconds. (She followed the Beginners Luck recipe from Simple Green Smoothies at the bottom of this post: 100daysofrealfood/?p=13522). So Id say today and all around, our little club (started and run by a group of volunteer moms) was a big success. It was also a lot of work for us and a great reminder to appreciate what teachers do every day!
