Today we are proud to launch the results of our world-first mental health survey of thousands of doctors and medical students. The results are a wake-up call to the medical community that more must be done to promote mentally healthy workplaces. Too many doctors are burnt out, and perhaps more concerning is the fact that one in five medical students and one in ten doctors had suicidal thoughts in the past year. Levels of stigma revealed by the survey prove doctors could be reluctant to admit they need mental health support. The report, which you can download at bit.ly/15Xr83v, outlines a range of ways these issues can be tackled, including the development of a mental health strategy for the Australian medical community, guidelines around working hours and better mental health education in universities to reduce stigma.
