Today we celebrate the MLK birthday. Do you remember being bussed - TopicsExpress

Today we celebrate the MLK birthday. Do you remember being bussed in Columbia? Here is what I remember: • My short blog for tonight: those of us who are still friends from Columbia High School have a lot to be proud of. We were the first group of kids who were bussed in SC for racial equality in the school systems. But, no busses were overturned or blocked. No one blocked us from entering schools in Columbia (Wardlaw Middle School for me.) No one protested so that people got hurt. We did it peacefully. I am not going to lie. I had a few neighbors that sent their kids to private school. But they were few and far between. And those kids, eventually, went to St. Andrew’s Middle School and CHS. But, we were one up on them. We had already integrated. Yes, there were problems. But the majority of those problems stemmed from our parents, not us. We became friends, which is what I was looking for when bussing occurred in Columbia, SC. We, who were the first group of kids to bus in SC, fulfilled Dr. King’s legacy. In his “I have a Dream” speech, Dr. King said what he didn’t have to tell us because we were children. We did not have the same objections that our parents might have had. We, children, who didn’t fight bussing in Columbia, recognized that we were getting an opportunity that our parents did not have, an opportunity of a lifetime---to make new friends and to keep those friends for a lifetime even if it is through Facebook. We live Dr. King’s legacy every day because we are friends still.
