Today we celebrate the dedication, in 1897, our own Soldiers Monument still found in front of the DeKalb County Courthouse. The monument was dedicated with high levels of pomp and circumstance. The ceremony included an address by Colonel Thomas G. Lawler, past commander of the local GAR chapter and ex-governor W.D Hoard; much patriotic music provided by the Rockford Military Band and the Temple Quartet; and a benediction by the Bishop Samuel Fallows, D.D. of the Reformed Episcopal Church. The occasion was accompanied by a lengthy parade of veterans. According to the Sycamore True Republican, The procession will form on State street under the supervision of Chief Marshal A. J. Driver and staff , promptly at 1 oclock, in three divisions: First, civic societies; second, G. A. R. Posts of DeKalb county and visiting Posts; third, city councils, village boards of trustees, board of supervisors of DeKalb county, speakers and distinguished guests. The monument still stands as a testament to the brave DeKalb County soldiers who fought in the Civil War. It is a testament to this community that the monument still stands and is being restored through the efforts of the current Sons of Union Veterans.
